Interview

Yumi Sakugawa p1

READERSVOICE.Com aims to collect a few interesting reading tips. Yumi Sakugawa is the author of the graphic novel I think I am in Friend-Love With You, which will be released in December but can be pre-ordered on Amazon. Her comics have a simple, elegant style, with nice touches of fantasy and humor, and she has had comics and illustrations published in Wonderhowto.com, Buzzfeed, Lifehacker, The Rumpus and Papermag. See yumisakugawa.com for some of her comics. There are some good reading tips in this interview.

READERSVOICE.COM: I have read that you liked Ray Bradbury, Catching the Big Fish by David Lynch, and comics by Moto Hagio [creator of works like A Drunken Dream and Other Stories], Rutu Modan [the graphic novel Exit Wounds], Craig Thompson [the graphic novel Blankets], and Adrian Tomine [The Complete Optic Nerve Mini-Comics].
Do you like fantasy stories or novels? What are some other books you are glad you found over the years?

YUMI SAKUGAWA: I enjoy both fantasy stories and novels. I honestly enjoy any good story that warps my perception of things and makes me feel strange feelings that don’t go away easily.
My most recent favorite reads I just read this summer are The Color Master by Aimee Bender, Super Sad True Love Story by Gary Shteyngart and The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman. My recent favorite comic book read is The End of the Fucking World by Chuck Forsman. My last truly immersive read of a very long book I really loved was 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami.

RV: How many pages will be in I Think I am in Friend-Love With You, published by Adams Media, and what page size would it be, A4?

YS: I am actually not sure yet what the final page count will be since the book is still in post-production, though I know for a fact that it will be over 120 pages. The dimensions of the book in inches will fall somewhere between A4 and A5.
