Ted Intorcio became interested in the world of non-super hero comics in Denver in 2005. He is probably most known for his comics D.O.A. – The Death of Carl “Alfalfa” Switzer and his autobiographical comic Head and Torso. Check out headandtorso.blogspot.com. See also his website at tintopress.com to see some of his publications, including Short and Merciless Stories. He is interested in the endless possibilities of comics, particularly minicomics which allow the artist a lot of creative freedom, partly due to cheap production with cheap printing materials and smaller print runs. He has read widely. Favorite comics creators have included Julia Wertz (author of the autobiographical graphic novel Drinking at the Movies, 2010) and Robert Crumb.
READERSVOICE.COM: How did you hook up with the creators of Short and Merciless Stories, Marco Taddei and Simone Angelini?
TED INTORCIO: They emailed me. I checked out the stories and was really interested at the special qualities it had. It’s still my personal favorite of all the things Tinto has published.
RV: How have you found out about other comics artists you’ve distributed?
TI: Most of the have contacted me via [email protected] In some cases I already knew the creators or was introduced by fellow creators. In some cases I’ve approached creators who I admire.
RV: You have a fondness for biographical and autobiographical comics, like your biography D.O.A. – The Death of Carl “Alfalfa” Switzer, and your autobiographical comic Head and Torso, as well as some comics you feature on Tinto Press, like work by Steve Shreve and the Fifth Collection of SpinaDoodles. What are some of your favourite autobiographical comics from the past and current authors?
TI: Anything by Sam Spina, Noah VanSciver, Julia Wertz, Seth, Chester Brown, Joe Matt, Alison Bechdel, John Porcellino, Pat Moriarty and of course the great Robert Crumb. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg!
